For many children in rural Kashare, learning English is particularly difficult. Although English is Uganda’s official language and the language used in national examinations, many children begin learning it later than their urban peers and have very little opportunity to practise outside the classroom. At home and within their communities, English is rarely spoken, and access to English-language books, media and resources is limited.
Traditional classroom teaching often relies on memorisation rather than active learning, making it harder for children to develop the confidence and communication skills they need. Without stronger English skills, pupils can struggle across all subjects, limiting their exam performance, future education and long-term opportunities.
Since launching the programme in 2016, Kanaama International Community Support has worked alongside primary school teachers to introduce engaging, interactive ways of teaching that are woven into everyday lessons. Rather than relying solely on rote learning, teachers use practical activities, discussion, debates, games and participation to help children build confidence and understanding. Additionally, special clubs which focus on using English are arranged around activities including poetry, debating, spelling, essay writing and English speaking.
The programme equips teachers with skills they can continue using long after the training has finished, creating lasting improvements within their schools. Following encouraging results, the programme expanded to all 16 primary schools in Kashare 2024, helping even more teachers deliver high-quality English lessons and giving more children the opportunity to succeed both in school and in later life.
