The difference we're making

A simple daily meal is helping children attend school more regularly, improving their concentration, wellbeing and ability to engage fully in learning.

The challenge

Many children in rural Uganda attend school without having eaten a nutritious meal. Hunger makes it difficult for them to concentrate, participate in lessons and maintain consistent attendance. For some families, food insecurity means that breakfast is not always available before the school day begins.

This can affect children’s learning outcomes and overall wellbeing, making it harder for them to stay engaged in education. By addressing hunger at the start of the school day, the programme helps create a more stable learning environment where children are better able to focus and succeed.

Our approach

Working with local schools and partners, we fund a daily Breakfast Club that provides maize porridge to children each school morning. This simple but effective intervention ensures that children begin the day with energy and are better prepared to learn.

The programme is delivered in partnership with local communities, who help with preparation and distribution. This shared approach helps build ownership and ensures the programme is embedded within the school environment.

Looking ahead

The programme aims to expand breakfast provision to reach more children and potentially extend into additional schools. In the longer term, we hope to strengthen food security initiatives that support both school attendance and community resilience.
